A quick note before we dive in:
This post kicks off a new series I’m calling Upside-Down Wisdom. On a regular basis, I’ll be flipping a familiar cultural belief or bit of “wisdom” on its head—and exploring what we might see when we do.
These will be short, thought-provoking reflections meant to challenge the things we’ve been told... especially the things we’ve never thought to question.
If you enjoy them, great—there are more on the way.
If you'd rather not receive this series in your inbox, you can unsubscribe from just Upside-Down Wisdom series using the link at the bottom of the email, while still staying subscribed to the main feed.
Thanks for reading.
Upside-Down Wisdom #1: Identity
“I am a (insert label here).”
We say it all the time:
“I’m an introvert.”
“I’m not a morning person.”
“I’m a perfectionist.”
“I have anxiety.”
“I’m the kind of person who needs control.”
“That’s just how I am.”
It sounds like self-awareness.
But it’s not. It’s self-containment.
We’re not describing who we are—we’re describing the thought patterns we’ve gotten used to.
Then we carve them into identity and call them truth.
But here’s the thing:
You’re not a label.
You’re not a fixed point.
You’re not a type of person.
You’re consciousness—fluid, alive, and never actually pinned down by what you believe about yourself.
Here’s today’s Upside-Down Wisdom:
You’re not who you think you are.
You’re the one doing the thinking.
